On Wednesday, August 7th, the first session of the “Environmental Sustainability Horizons in the Context of Climate Change and Renewable Energy Production” program was launched.

The program is organized by the National Forum for Environment and Sustainable Development (NFESD) in partnership with the International Sustainable Research and Education Network (ISREN).

The first session of the program focused on “The Role of Youth in Environmental Conservation and the Future of Sustainability”, with academic and researcher Wassim Al-Madhoun, founder of the non-profit Global Sustainability Ambassadors Network.

Dr. Al-Madhoun began the session by addressing the unsustainable production behaviors currently practiced in our society and their threats to biodiversity, health, population growth, economic growth, and others. He explained the harms of this behavioral model and the importance of transitioning to an environmentally-friendly circular economy.

Dr. Al-Madhoun discussed the role assigned to youth in contributing to environmental conservation and pushing towards the transition to sustainable production behaviors. He pointed out that effectively engaging youth in sustainability efforts requires developing educational strategies that adopt this approach, involving them in decision-making, and empowering them to play a positive role at the individual and community levels.

He highlighted that empowering youth requires developing their capabilities, providing them with knowledge and making it accessible, foremost of which is quality education. It also requires refining and increasing their skills, especially those related to green, environmentally-friendly jobs, to enable them to be leaders and agents of change in the future.

The session included participations and interactions from attendees, addressing the various obstacles that limit youth participation in environmental conservation efforts and the transition towards sustainable behavior in the Arab world. Dr. Al-Madhoun presented a set of possible steps and solutions that youth should take to overcome some of these obstacles, emphasizing the importance of a positive engagement with all existing problems and obstacles.

It is worth noting that the “Horizons of Sustainable Development in the Context of Climate Change and Renewable Energy Production” program was designed as a specialized program to enhance the knowledge aspect of Arab youth on environmental and climate change issues through sessions presented by expert academics with long experience and recognized influence in these fields. On Wednesday, August 7th, the first session of the “Environmental Sustainability Horizons in the Context of Climate Change and Renewable Energy Production” program was launched.
